Rules of the game
1 › Promoter: The Promoter of the RPS Game (the Game) is Telecom Mobile Limited (Telecom). Game information published by Telecom (including how to enter) forms part of these terms and conditions.
2 › Term: the term of the game is
from 1 February 2005 until 27 February 2005
3 › Who can play:
- The Game is open to any individual resident in New Zealand who owns a 027 mobile phone.
- Employees of Telecom and any of Telecom's agencies associated with the Game can play the Game and win Weekly Prizes, but they are not eligible to participate in the Final Round Play Off.
- If you are a corporate, business or non-person entity (Business Customers), you should obtain the prior approval of the account holder before registering to play the Game. Business Customers will only be eligible to participate in the Final Round Play Off if they have the consent of the account holder. If the winner of a Weekly Prize is a Business Customer, the account holder will receive the prize. Winners cannot transfer the prize without the prior consent of Telecom.
- Entrants must not be in breach of their contract with Telecom, nor have given or have been given notice
4 › How to enter: You must register to be eligible to play the game and win prizes. Registration opens on 1 February 2005 and closes at midday on 11 February 2005. You can register online at www.rps027.co.nz or by texting RPS to 2005. There is no charge for registration and texts to 2005 will incur no charge - it is free to enter and free to play.
5 › What is the Game: the Game is a text version of Rock Paper Scissors (RPS). It works like this:
- Players play "The Machine" in Rounds. Each Round comprises three Plays. The Machine will send a text to the player at the commencement of each Round inviting them to text R, P, or S by reply text. There is no charge to send this text. The Machine will then send its Play to the player by return. The Machine's Plays are selected at random and individuals have the same chance of winning as if they were playing against another individual. Rock (R) beats Scissors (S), Scissors (S) beats Paper (P) and Paper beats Rock (R). If a player selects the same play as The Machine, this constitutes a draw for that Play.
- Each Round comprises a best of three Plays. Players will advance to the next round if they beat or draw with The Machine in that Round. If either the machine or the player wins the first 2 Plays, then there will not be a third Play as the round has already been decided.
- If a player loses the Round, they will be "Knocked Out".
- If a player fails to respond to The Machine within 6 hours, they will be deemed to have lost that Round and will be Knocked Out.
- A player who has been Knocked Out will not be able to advance to the Final Round Play Off.
- Participants in the Final Round Play Off will be the final 8 players (the Finalists).
- The Final Round Play Off will be filmed in Auckland on 25 February 2005 and televised on C4 on 27 February 2005.
- If a Finalist is not eligible to participate in the Final Round Play Off because they are a Telecom employee, or they are a Business Customer unable to obtain the consent of the account holder, or they cannot attend the Final Round Play Off, a Player will be drawn from the group of Players who had not been eliminated in the Round prior to the Finalists qualifying.
- The Finalists will then play one another until there is only one player left. The final player left standing will then play The Machine to determine whether The Machine or the Player is the ultimate RPS champion.
- The first Round will take place after midday on 11 February 2004.
- The number of Rounds before the Final Round Play Off will vary, depending on how many players and how long it takes to identify the Finalists. It is anticipated that there will be at least one Round per day.
6 › Costs of attending the Final Round Play Off: Telecom will cover the costs of transport to the Final Round Play Off (including flights and airport transfers if applicable). If a Finalist is not from Auckland, Telecom will pay for one night's accommodation in Auckland, at a hotel of Telecom's choice. Any and all other expenses associated with attending the Final Round Play Off must be borne by the Finalist.
7 › Minors: If a Finalist is a minor, Telecom will also pay for one parent or guardian to attend the Final Round Play Off with that Finalist.
8 › Confidentiality: It will be a condition of playing in the Final Round Play Off that Finalists sign a confidentiality agreement, restricting them from disclosing details about the Final Round Play Off until it has been televised.
9 › Weekly Prizes:
- Each Player registered before 11 February 2005 is eligible for Weekly Prizes, including Players who have been Knocked Out.
- There will be three Weekly Prize Draws, to be held on 11, 16 and 23 February 2004.
- Each Player who registers will be eligible for the first Weekly Prize Draw.
- For the second and third Weekly Prize Draws, each Player who plays a minimum of one Round in the relevant week will receive one entry into that week's Weekly Prize Draw.
- Players who play more than one Round in the relevant week will still only receive one entry into that week's Weekly Prize Draw.
- Weekly Prizes include:
- One Apple iPod Mini
- 20 Telecom video messaging mobile phones (connected to Telecom Go Prepaid - with $100 airtime preloaded)
- 10 Philips DVD recorders
- 100 double movie passes (we will do our best to provide you with a movie pass, but if you live in an area where there is no Village Sky City, Rialto or Reading cinema we may have to substitute your movie pass for $20 airtime)
- 500 credits of $10 airtime.
- If you are a Telecom Go Prepaid or Boost customer, airtime credits will be loaded on to your mobile phone. If you are on a monthly contract plan, the credit will appear on your next bill.
- If you win one of the other Weekly Prizes, you will be contacted on your mobile phone and asked to provide details of where the Weekly Prize should be delivered.

- One $5,000 travel voucher; and
- A Classic 50cc Vespa Scooter with two year warranty
- Travel vouchers entitle the winner to any services offered by Air New Zealand, such as flights, hotels and rental cars. The travel voucher must be used before 31 December 2005. The travel voucher is subject to terms and conditions. It is non transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash.
- If a winner is a minor, any travel prizes and the Vespa Scooter will be awarded to that winner's parent or guardian on their behalf.
- Final Round Play Off prizes will be given to the Finalists during the Final Round Play Off.
11 › Prizes cannot be exchanged
for cash or alternative prizes. Winners agree to accept the prize
"as is". The prizes are subject to availability and
Telecom reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to award a
prize of greater or equal value if the advertised prizes are unavailable.
All expenses relating to the acceptance of any prize, which are
not explicitly listed as being awarded, are the responsibility
of the prize winner. Any depiction of prizes is for illustrative
purposes only. If we cannot contact you to receive a prize, we
will draw another prize winner.
12 › Telecom can take no responsibility for lost, late or misdirected texts.
13 › Telecom reserves the right to disqualify Players for any reason, including sending text messages containing indecent or offensive language to the 2005 short code.
14 › If in Telecom's opinion, there is any suspected or actual evidence of electronic or non-electronic tampering with any portion of the Game, or if computer virus, bugs, unauthorized intervention, fraud, or technical difficulties or failures compromise or corrupt or affect the administration, integrity, security, fairness, or proper conduct of the Game, Telecom reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process and or void any entries submitted fraudulently, to modify or suspend the Game, or to terminate the Game and conduct a random drawing to award the remaining prizes using all non-suspect entries received as of the termination date.
15 › Telecom reserves the right to modify or terminate the Game in its entirety at any time and at its sole discretion. Should the Game be terminated or modified prior to the stated expiration date, notice will be posted on www.rps027.co.nz.
16 › Telecom will not be liable to any person in any way in relation to this Game or the prize(s) (including but not limited to personal injury) except for any liability that cannot be excluded by law.
17 › Registering for the Game constitutes the Player's consent to Telecom using that person's name, city or town of residence, and photographs for promotional purposes.
18 › Telecom's decision in relation to any aspect of the Game is final and is binding and no correspondence will be entered into. Telecom reserves the right to verify the validity of an entry or a winner's right to redeem a prize in accordance with these terms.
19 › Telecom reserves the right to extend, change, or terminate this Game at any time. No claim may be made against Telecom or any of its agents or employees in connection with such change or cancellation.
20 › By entering the Game you are deemed to accept all these terms and conditions.
21 › The RPS Privacy Policy applies.
